General Printing FAQs

What is the difference between pages and leaves?
A leaf is a sheet of paper and a page is typically a side of paper, So a leaf of paper could be two printed pages (2pp) if double-sided or just one printed page (1pp) if single-sided.
Ink that prints beyond the trim edge of the page to ensure it extends to the edge of the page after trimming. As there is a degree of movement when printing on any press, you should always create 3mm bleed on all edges where bleed is needed. Supplying your job without bleed may result in white lines when we trim it.
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black – the inks our Indigo digital presses mix together to make colours on your printed job. RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue – the colours of light a computer screen mixes together to make colours on your screen.
All images should be 300 dpi. DPI is the amount of ink dots per inch; 300 dots per inch is the required standard for printed material. Anything below 200 dpi may not be good enough resolution for printing.
Of course, you can, however, we recommend that you save your file as a pdf instead. If you create a pdf from an office program it will save your fonts, images, logos etc that you used to create the file. To do this go to ‘File’, ‘Save As’ and change the file format to PDF. If we convert your office file at our end we may not have the exact fonts, there may be elements missing or items could move due to different versions of Microsoft Office, for this reason, we will email you a pdf proof for approval. Your job will be placed on hold pending your response to proceed.
You can supply 1 pdf file with all the pages in the correct running order. For 2 versions of a double-sided business card you would supply: Page 1 = front_version1, Page 2 = back_version1, Page 3 = front_version2, Page 4 = back_version2 Alternatively, you could supply 2 pdf files, one for each version.

Stapled Documents FAQs

What is stapled document printing?
Stapled document printing is a straightforward printing technique which involves binding together pages using staples along the spine of the document. This type of binding is also known in the print industry as saddle-stitched.
The number of pages in a stapled printed document will depend greatly on the thickness of the paper. Here at DigitalPrinting.co.uk, we can print and bind together documents containing up to 48 printed pages.
No. A sheet of paper has 2 sides, each one of these sides is referred to as a page.
Your stapled document can only be printed in multiples of 4 pages. When a single A3 sheet is folded in half, it becomes four A4 pages. This is to ensure that no pages fall out of your stapled document. For example, if you choose an A4 size stapled document, that includes 8 pages, from DigitalPrinting.co.uk, we will print your artwork on two A3 sheets that are then folded and stapled together to make an 8-page booklet.
Stapled documents are the perfect solution for annual reports, magazines, price lists, information guides and brochures. A simple, yet cost-effective way of communicating key messaging in print.
We can provide stapled document in a range of sizes; 4 portrait or landscape, 1/3 A4 portrait, A5 portrait or landscape, and 210 x 210mm square.
We print stapled documents in silk coated paper (115gsm – 350gsm), gloss coated paper (115gsm – 350gsm) and premium uncoated paper (100gsm – 350gsm).
Yes, we have a comprehensive selection of luxury papers; Acquerello, Constellation Snow, Laid, Mohawk Felt, Nettuno, Sirio Pearl Oyster, Sirio Pearl Polar Dawn, Splendorgel Avorio or Gesso.

Stapled documents are available in a choice of finishes from single or double-sided lamination in gloss or matt finish, or opt for no lamination. Matt lamination gives a soft, contemporary effect. Adding a gloss lamination gives a higher quality shine finish than printing on gloss paper alone. Lamination is most useful with solid colours or images to enhance their vibrancy or where you want to protect your printed documents.

Yes. Here at DigitalPrinting.co.uk, we provide templates in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and PDF formats. View our templates.
Please supply stapled documents as one multi-page PDF file with all the pages in the correct running order. Include blank pages wherever needed in the running order and remember that your total page count should be divisible by 4.
Yes, this is very important when producing books. You should always create 3mm bleed on all edges where bleed is needed.
Yes, ensure you don’t place text too close to the edge of the page. As a rule, try to leave at least 5mm of space from the trimmed edge. A common mistake is placing page numbers too close to the edge. If you need help setting your margins you can refer to our templates.
If you wish to have your text printed across the spread pages of your stapled document, then we recommend that you do not place your text on the centrefold of the spread as your text could disappear underneath the staples or line up incorrectly if your text is small.
Here at DigitalPrinting.co.uk, we offer our customers same-day despatch (if you order by 12 noon) on all of our booklets including our stapled documents.

Wiro Bound FAQs

What is Wiro Binding?
Wiro bound booklets are bound together like a notepad, where a wire is inserted and threaded through small punched holes within the margin of the booklet. Wiro bound, also known as spiral-bound due to the long wire coil, are a very popular and cost-effective binding method which allows you to let your booklet lie completely flat on a table making it ideal for cooking books, instruction manuals or presentations when you need your hands free.
Wiro bound booklets are ideal for recipe books, annual reports, travel atlas, wall calendars, planners, pocket booklets, manuals, music booklets, guides and other reference materials because of the booklets ability to lie completely flat on a surface and keep your hands free.
Wiro-bound document open 360 degrees (cover to cover) which allows them to fold flat and lie flat for easier reference. When opened, the pages of a wiro-bound document rotate around the wire with very little resistance. This binding style works extremely well with index tabs.
Wiro binding involves gathering together the pages you wish to bind and punching holes through the cover and pages along the side where the margin of the booklet will be. Next, a strong, durable wire will be inserted and closed through the holes that were made earlier to hold together the booklet.
The minimum number of pages that can be wiro bound together is four. This is because each sheet counts as two pages.
The maximum number of pages that can be wiro bound together will depend on the capacity of the largest wire available and the thickness of the paper being used. Here at DigitalPrinting.co.uk, the maximum number of pages that we can wiro bound for you is 180 leaves which is equal to 360 printed sides.
We can provide wiro bound documents in sizes A3, A4, A5, 1/3 A4 and 210mm x 210mm square. A3 sizes can only be bound on the short edge.
All of our wiro bound documents are bound together with a black coloured wire.
We print wiro bound booklets in silk coated paper (115gsm – 350gsm), gloss coated paper (130gsm – 350gsm) and premium uncoated paper (100gsm – 350gsm).
Yes, we offer luxury papers in Acquerello, Constellation Snow, Laid, Mohawk Felt, Nettuno, Sirio Pearl Oyster, Sirio Pearl Polar Dawn, Splendorgel Avorio or Gesso.
There are three finishing options available. Matt lamination gives a soft, contemporary effect. Gloss lamination gives a higher quality shine finish than gloss card. Lamination is most useful with solid colours or images to enhance their vibrancy or where you want to protect your printed documents. However, lamination is not available on luxury papers.
Yes, we provide templates in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and PDF formats. View our templates here.

Yes, this is very important when producing wiro bound booklets. Please provide at least 3mm bleed on all edges. For more information, see Bleed Explained guide.
When designing a wiro bound book, please ensure that all-important content and text is kept to a minimum of 12mm from the bound edge of each page. This would be the left-hand side for right-hand pages and the right-hand side for left-hand pages.
If you supply us with a print-ready pdf then the fonts should be embedded. However, we might require fonts when supplying files in other formats.

Saddle-Stitched Booklets FAQs

What are saddle-stitched booklets?
Saddle-stitched refers to a very popular booklet binding technique that uses staples to hold together folded sheets of paper.
Saddle-stitched booklets are the perfect solution for annual reports, magazines, brochures and catalogues.
The process involves binding pages together using staples (known as stitches) along the spine of the booklet.
We can provide saddle-stitched booklets in a selection of finished sizes: 120 x 120 mm, A6, 140 x 140 mm, 148 x 148 mm, ⅓ A4, A5, US comic, 210 x 210 mm, US Letter, A4 Landscape and A4 Portrait.
The minimum number of pages is 8 and the total page count must go up in multiples of 4. Thus, two pages folded in half that can be stapled together to become an 8-page book.
The maximum number of pages that we recommend is 52 pages. The reason for this is to ensure that your booklet will fold over neatly. More than 52 pages we recommend you use perfect bound.
We print our saddle-stitched booklets in silk coated paper (115gsm – 350gs), gloss coated (115gsm – 350gs) and premium uncoated (100gsm – 350gs).
You can choose from a comprehensive selection of luxury papers including, Acquerello, Constellation Snow, Laid, Mohawk Felt, Nettuno, Sirio Pearl Oyster, Sirio Pearl Polar Dawn, Splendorgel Avorio and Gesso.

No. It’s not possible to print on the spine of your saddle-stitched booklet because it’s not a flat surface.
Please supply saddle-stitched booklets as one multi-page PDF which consists of single pages running from the front cover through to the back cover, including any blank pages if needed. Saddle-stitched booklets must be created in multiples of 4 pages.

Saddle-stitched printing is the least expensive of all binding options and available with fast turnaround.

Perfect Bound Books FAQs

What are perfect bound books?

Perfect bound books are created by glueing the pages to the spine of the book. Perfect bound books get their name from the process that they undergo: the pages and the cover of the book are all cut to be the exact same size and therefore they line up together perfectly.

Q. Where would you use perfect bound books?

Perfect bound printing is commonly used for magazines, portfolios, graphic novels, workbooks, catalogues, brochures and reports. This method binds your document together with adhesive along the spine to provide a smooth and stylish finish.

Q. What are the benefits of perfect binding?

Perfect bound books are professional in appearance, cost-effective even for low quantities and a great option for documents from 40 up to 700 printed pages. The binding glue is flexible and non-brittle, meaning that the books open flatter without cracking the spine or pages falling out.

Perfect bound and saddle-stitched are the two most common methods of booklet binding. Saddle-stitching involves binding multiple pages together along a fold (also known as the spine) with two staples. On the other hand, perfect bound books have a flat spine. The sheets of paper are gathered together and glue is applied to the binding edge, then the cover of the book is placed on the glue.
With perfect binding, all the printed pages are stacked in a block and squared off. Then the pages are glued together along the spine with extremely strong PUR adhesive. The printed cover is then wrapped around and glued on to the spine as well. The remaining three edges are then trimmed so that the edges of the block are perfectly neat.
We only use PUR glue to perfect bind our books as it is much stronger than hot melt glue. PUR binding is more tolerant to higher and lower temperatures as is very flexible and non-brittle.
Choose from silk, gloss or uncoated for your cover from 215gsm to 350gsm. Your inner (text) pages can be uncoated, silk or gloss, in weights ranging from 100gsm to 200gsm.
No. The thickness of your inner paper type determines how many pages you can select. This is because the minimum spine thickness is 2mm. If you choose 100gsm uncoated then 28 pages will be the minimum page count. If you choose 170gsm uncoated then 20 pages will be the minimum page count. If your book contains less pages than the minimum page count then saddle-stitched or wiro-binding would be a more suitable option.
Our perfect bound books are available in A4 portrait, 1/3 A4 portrait, A5 portrait or landscape or 210 x 210mm square.

Please supply perfect bound books as two multi-page PDFs consisting of a cover file and inners file. The cover PDF should be supplied as a spread including the spine. The inner PDF should contain only the inner pages in correct running order.
Yes, this is very important when providing artwork for perfect-bound books. When an image or colour on the page extends past the crop marks, it is regarded as bleed. As there is a degree of movement when printing on any press, you should always create at least 3mm bleed on all edges.
Yes. The spine area of your book cover is glued to the spine edge created by the block of inner pages. As the cover wraps around these inner pages, up to 9mm of the front and back cover will be glued to the front and back inside pages on the spine side of the book. The cover is creased here to create a hinge that protects the spine glue. With this in mind, we recommend that you use a margin of 12mm minimum from the bound edge of each page as 9mm is used to bind the perfect-bound book.
If you supply us with a Print Ready PDF then fonts are embedded or converted to outlines. However, we may request the fonts if files are supplied in other formats.

Stickers and Labels FAQs

How do I use stickers as a marketing tool?
Stickers are suitable for so many different jobs including address labels, name badges, and product labels. With so many uses for stickers and labels, it’s easy to see how they can play a role in adding value to your brand.
The purpose of a label is to be able to easily identify an item – for example, it could tell you about its parts, where it belongs, what it is, nutritional information etc. A label should be able to tell you everything you need to know about said item.
At DigitalPrinting.co.uk, all of our round, square and rectangle stickers are printed on white 120gsm gloss paper adhesive sheets. We print all our A–sized stickers on quality white 170gsm silk or gloss permanent adhesive. The number of stickers per sheets depends on the size of the sticker. Size 37mm, for example, has 70 stickers per sheet but size 88mm has 12 stickers per sheet.
Only the A-sized stickers are available on the marine grade adhesive which is water-resistant, and you must select Waterproof Adhesive as your paper type when ordering.
Our Marine Grade Stickers are Matt White (IDP) PE (Teslin®) (Uncoated, filled polyolefin film). A unique material that looks, prints and fabricates like paper but is durable like plastic film. The microporous structure makes the product absorptive yet water-resistant, soft and pliable but strong, highly printable and durable. The porous, uncoated nature of the sheet allows inks and toners to form strong bonds with the substrate. The material is waterproof, durable (chemical and abrasion-resistant), conformable, steam sterilisable and offers a long-life alternative to paper labels. Marine-grade UV acrylic adhesive in conjunction with this face material is approved to BS5609 Part 2 (labelling of chemicals for transport by sea/air). For test tube or tight radius labelling the conformability of the face combined with the strength of the adhesive makes this combination ideal. The adhesive meets the requirements of FDA 21 CFR 175.105 (for indirect food contact), EN71-3 (Toy Safety), CONEG, The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations 2015 & EU Regulation 94/62/EC (Packaging and Packaging Waste). No heavy metals are used in the manufacturing process and typical contents are less than 1ppm.

Minimum application temperature: 0°C
Temperature range -40°C to +150°C
Tack and final adhesion: Permanent
Kiss-cut stickers are stickers that are lightly cut to shape, so only the sticker is cut but the backing sheet is not.  This way the sticker can be easily peeled away from the sticker sheet. When you peel out the desired sticker, the backing remains.
